*British Association Counselling & Psychotherapy
The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) definition is:
“Counselling and psychotherapy are umbrella terms that cover a range of talking therapies. They are delivered by trained practitioners who work with people over a short or long term to help them bring about effective change or enhance their wellbeing.”
It’s good to talk – simply talking to someone about our problems can really help us come to terms with them. Most of us can deal with and accept changes and their problems and move on but sometimes there are situations that are too difficult and overwhelming, and that is when talking can make such a difference.
Talking to a counsellor is an opportunity to focus on your thoughts and feeling in the presence of a trained professional in time and space outside your situation.
We will work together to help you understand what is happening to you, how you are feeling and how you can start to heal.
The service offers counselling through NHS Near Me or by telephone by a fully qualified BACP registered counsellor. Support is offered initially for 6 sessions, each lasting for 50 minutes. There will be an assessment in the first session & also after 6 sessions & support will be continued if we both feel that this is helpful.
You can self refer, through calling 07812486419 & leaving a message or texting giving your name and contact number. The counsellor will get back to you to arrange an appointment.
You will receive a letter with details of your appointment and a link to your appointment
An sms reminder will also be sent to you with the link for your appointment
Telephone /video appointments work well if you can manage to find a safe closed space to talk, and especially if you can use headphones with a microphone.
The counsellor will be talking to you from a safe closed space using headphones.
Everything you say will remain confidential. This means we will not pass on any information about you to anyone else unless we think you are at risk of harm to yourself or another person.
No telephone/ video sessions shall be recorded
This is a confidential service, unless we are concerned that you or someone else is at immediate risk. We will always talk to you if we need to contact any other service, if possible.
After an appointment it can feel like you are still caught up in the things you have talked about. It can be helpful to plan a ritual after which you will always follow after an appointment. This might be something like making a cup of tea, having a bath or a walk or listening to some music.
Alternatives Listening Rooms in Dundee have put together a rescue package page which has some links to apps which can also be helpful after a session.
Alternative Listening Rooms also offer pre and post-abortion support online through ZOOM & webchat and by telephone (& face to face depending on Covid restrictions). Their website has an excellent resources page.
