If you have symptoms

If you have symptoms, have had confirmed contact with someone who has been diagnosed with an STI or you are aged under 16 contact the Sexual Health Service on 01382 425542 straight away to make an in-person appointment.  Lines are open Monday – Friday between 9 am and 12 noon.

Out of Hours 

Phone 111 if you become very ill and have:
  • severe pain
  • a high temperature
  • nausea and/or vomiting

Symptoms may include:

Pain when you pass urine (pee)

Pain during sex

Discharge from the penis or vagina which is not normal for you

Itching, burning or tingling around the genitals

Blisters, sores, spots or lumps around the genitals or anus

Pain low down in your tummy

Irregular bleeding between your periods or after sex

Pain in your testicles

If you don't have symptoms

You can test for the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) on your own rather than going to a sexual health clinic if you do not have symptoms. This is known as self-sampling. If done correctly, it can be just as reliable as getting tested at a sexual health clinic.

The STIs that you can test for include:

chlamydia

gonorrhoea

HIV

syphilis

STI SELF SAMPLE KITS: This service is for those without symptoms. If you have symptoms or would like to talk to us about anything else please call 01382 425 542 1) Order: Decided which type of test you require and order via our website 2) Wait: Your kit will be sent via royal mail, will arrive in discreet packaging and fit through the letterbox 3) Take your sample: Take your sample(s) following the instructions included in your kit. 4) Drop off: Drop off your completed and sealed kit at a Tayside GP Practice (Doesn't have to be your own) 5) Results: Results should be available 7 days after the laboratory has received the kit. You can phone the automated results line anytime.
Question: I have symptoms can I still order a self sampling kit? This service is for those without symptoms. If you have symptoms or would like to talk to us about anything else please call 01382 425 542. Question: There are no kits available online We can only offer a limited number of testing kits for the laboratory to process each day. If there are no available kits to order online it means we have run out for that day. We release new kits periodically throughout the day, excluding public holidays. Question: I don’t live or work in Tayside, can I order a kit? We can only post out kits using the online service to Tayside postcodes. Not all areas offer a self sampling kit service. Therefore, you need to enter a Tayside postcode to have the option to order a kit from us. Question: I would like to collect my sampling kit in person. If you would like to collect your testing kit, please choose this option on the drop-down list when ordering your kit. At present we can only offer collection in person at the Sexual Health Clinics in Ninewells Hospital Dundee and Drumhar Health Centre Perth. You will receive a text when your kit is ready to be picked up.
Question: I don’t want the kit sent to my home address. If you don’t want it posted to your home address, it is possible to have your kit sent to another safe address. Please order the kit using a Tayside address that you would like it sent to. Question: How does the kit arrive? The testing kit comes in a discreet envelope with no information revealing its contents or that it has come from us. Your kit will arrive by Royal Mail and should fit through your letter box. Question: My kit hasn’t arrived, what do I do? Please allow up to 10 working days for the kit to arrive before contacting us. If you haven’t received your testing kit after 10 working days please call us.

Question: How long from producing the relevant samples do I have before handing in? We would appreciate if you could drop your samples into a GP practice or sexual health clinic within 24 hours or when they reopen if you are testing at a weekend. Question: Where can I drop off my kit? Kits should be dropped off at a Tayside GP Practice or Tayside Sexual and Reproductive Health clinics within Ninewells Hospital, or Drumhar Health Centre. There is no patient identifiable information on kit, and there will be no need to explain what the tests were for to the receptionist. Question: Do I have to drop it off at my GP? No. You can also drop your kit off at the Sexual and Reproductive Health clinics within Ninewells Hospital, Dundee (Mon- Fri 9am-4pm) or Drumhar Health Centre, Perth (Mon-Thu 9am-4pm). To find a list of GP Practices in Tayside visit bit.ly/TaysideGPs Question: How long do I have to drop my testing kit off? Return the testing kit as soon as possible after ordering but ensure you test at the correct time (see Taking a Sample). Please return your test within 4 weeks of it being sent to you or we may not be able to process it.
Question: How do I get my results? Call the automated results phone line on 01382 425 542 (option 2) You will be asked to insert your patient ID number (which will be in your kit) and your date of birth in 6 digits (ddmmyy). The results line is updated once per day at 07:00am and results will be available for 3 months. Your results are usually available within 7 days of being received in our laboratory (not from drop off). If your results are taking longer than 7 days please call 01382 425 542 (option 1) Question: What if my results are positive? One of our Health Advisors will usually contact you to arrange treatment. If you find out you have tested positive for an infection before we contact you (for example from the automated results line), then please contact our team on 01382 425 542 (option 1) to arrange treatment. Clinic Closure 10th of February

We are closed on Tuesday 10th of February for staff training. If you need support while we are closed please contact your GP, local pharmacy, or NHS 24 on 111.
